Order of Saint George the Knight
The Order of Saint George was founded in 1326 in Esztergom by noble lords with the approval of Charles Robert of Anjou – as the first chivalric order in Europe not established by the Church – with the consent, advice and support of Father Boleszlo, Archbishop of Esztergom, hereditary Lord Lieutenant, and other bishops, in the presence of the Esztergom Chapter. The name was chosen in honour of Saint George, who was extremely popular in the Middle Ages and is known as a Roman military officer who professed and embraced the Christian faith and was willing to make the greatest sacrifice for it: martyrdom, during the time of Diocletian. His martyrdom took place on 23 April 303 in Nicomedia, and his tomb is located in Lydda. According to the Deed of Foundation, the friendly order is a fellowship bound by love. The number of members was limited to a maximum of 50. It was the duty of the members of the order to defend the Church and uphold the knightly virtues: piety, comradeship, care for the poor, ransoming of captives, loyalty to the king, and the defence of the Church and the homeland.
